So I have been keeping multiple sketchbooks and one of them I reserve for creating creatures out of shapes that I lay down on the paper. I was talking with one of my buddies and we were joking that the 2nd page could be characters at a space drive-thru. See if you can assign a role for each of the creatures. Keep utilizing that imagination Space Cowboy!
Over the Winter break I attended a figure drawing Marathon and on the Final day there was a figure painting session with one of my instructors Cameron Chun. above is my thumb and below is the 5 by 7 piece. I think what I learned from this experience is the importance of following my original thumb. I feel I captured the value a little better in that piece than in my final. Another important lesson is to never stop practicing those fundamentals, and in regards to this gouache painting I was struggling with working with color. The models right leg had a blue ultramarine light as a secondary light source while a spotlight was used as a primary light source.
So over the winter break a couple of buddies and I went to San Mateo to do some sketching for the day. To be completely honest we had no clue what we would find. Being the most familiar with the area I suggested we check out Coyote Point and we found a real gem of a drawing/painting spot. Really want to return to this spot!
Check out my buddy Joaquin's work at:
and keep your eyes and ears open for my buddy Rodney's stuff in the future.
Went to my old hangout spot from Junior College to draw people. It's interesting, lately I have been looking at people and been trying to imagine what their story is, The challenge now is to be able to convey that feeling/story in my drawings.
I hope that you all had a wonderful holiday season below I posted some things that I have done over my holiday break. I opted to take a step back and to focus primarily on my drawing skills. I'm not going to lie when I say that the past week has been more or less an on and off the wagon adventure in regards to being productive on my time off. While I have been trying to focus on the basics I have also been taking time to delve into new things such as slowly (emphasis on slowly) dabbling in photoshop. I am happy to say that I have had the time to pick up a copy of Robert Henri's "The Art Spirit" which has been helping me get through frustration in regards to my work. Overall I feel that I have been productive for the most part. You may have noticed my blog is sort of in disarray at the current moment but there is a good explanation for that, I have been thinking about re designing my current blog, with that being said I am still trying to figure out what it is I want. In other words "Sorry for the mess, we are working on getting this place in good form". Thank you for stopping by, lets hope 2014 has a lot of exciting adventures in store for us.
